EU Hand Luggage Regulations

From 7th January 2008, new hand luggage regulations were brought into force by the British Government. Please read these carefully. If you have any questions, these should be referred to the British Airport Authority website which is www.baa.com

The new regulations relate to the lifting of the one-bag restriction for cabin luggage. However, to add to the confusion, some airlines have decided to keep the single cabin baggage restriction. The advice is to check with your airline before you travel.

The EU restrictions on liquids remain in force.

EU Member states are:
Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Passengers may carry small quantities of liquids but only within separate containers, each of which may not have a capacity greater than 100ml. 100ml relates to the size of the container, not the amount of liquid within the container so for example, a 500ml water bottle with 50ml of water would not be permitted.

These containers must be placed in a single, transparent, re-sealable, plastic bag which itself may not exceed 1 litre in capacity. The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably  and the bag sealed. Each passenger may only carry one such bag of liquids. This bag must be presented for examination at airport security.

Definition of Liquids

  • The term 'liquids' cover the following items:

  • All drinks, including water, soup and syrups

  • Creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara etc

  • Sprays and pressurised containers including shaving foam and deodorants

  • Pastes, including toothpaste

  • Gels, including hair gel and shower gel

  • Any other solution and items of similar consistency

Medicines

Essential medicines and baby food will be permitted in quantities greater than 100ml but they will be subject to authentication by security.

Cabin Baggage

Each passenger is permitted to carry just 1 piece of cabin luggage with a maximum size of 56xcm x 45cm 25cm. The re-sealable bag for your liquids must be able to fit within this single piece of cabin baggage.

Laptops/Large electrical items

These items will be removed from your cabin baggage and screened separately. Please note, a laptop bag will be considered as your single piece of cabin baggage.
