Each year on the first Sunday in October, the eyes of the racing world turn to the Longchamp Racecourse in Paris for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. British and Irish race fans descend on the French capital in their thousands to be a part of the 2 day race meeting.

Hardened race goers come just for the racing but Paris is a popular destination with UK visitors and many people travel over to take in a bit of culture as well as the racing. A full day exploring Paris is a great way to start the weekend. As with any city the size of Paris, it is impossible to see everything in a day and once the sightseeing is over, thoughts turn to racing.

Longchamp is a course with a long history dating back to the mid 1800s. In the early days, its location near the banks of the River Seine meant that race goers travelled there by boat. The course hosts races throughout the year but “the Arc” is undoubtedly the highlight with prize money for the race now in excess of 4 million Euros.

The race was inaugurated in 1920 and the field is limited to 20 runners. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is growing more popular every year and anyone planning to attend is strongly advised to book their tickets and hotels in advance. Its easier enough to travel independently but there are also plenty of options for organised tours. These packages normally include entrance tickets to Longchamp but they will be the most basic tickets. If you want grandstand tickets, you’ll need to ask if you can upgrade.
